the alzheimer's project.

hbo created a documentary called the alzheimer's project. it airs may tenth and should be great. they seem pretty hopeful in the trailer, which is good and great, but i'd say to take their hope with a grain of salt (i'm negative nancy, i know). overall, i imagine this project will be super beneficial for all of us.

I had a chance to see a pre-screening of the HBO special, and it was great. The segment that I saw showed why clinical studies are so important. Current Alzheimer's therapies treat the symptoms associated with the disease, not the disease itself. There is a new study that explores if Bapineuzumab (Bapi), an investigational drug mentioned in the HBO special, can help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s can visit www.icarastudy.com to see if they might be eligible to enroll.

Thanks for the info! Yes, it is true-- there is nothing out there to treat the disease. We are a LONG way from that. Cognitive enhancers and SSRIs are generally what people who have dementia are taking. If they have vascular dementia, they are hopefully on some sort of stroke preventing medication, too.
